Louise Mulcahy is one of Ireland’s leading traditional musicians, renowned for her mastery of the uilleann pipes, tin whistle, and flute. She began playing the tin whistle at the age of five before progressing to the flute a few years later, drawing early inspiration from influential musicians such as Matt Molloy and Eamonn Cotter. At thirteen, she took up the uilleann pipes, studying with Dave Hegarty in Tralee and attending monthly masterclasses with the Na Píobairí Uilleann in Dublin.
As one of the foremost female performers on what has traditionally been a male-dominated instrument, Louise has earned widespread recognition both for her musicianship and for her groundbreaking research on women in uilleann piping, work that has received international critical acclaim. She featured on the NPU compilation album A New Dawn in 1999 and has shared her expertise internationally, teaching at the Chris Langan Piping Tionól in Toronto and the East Coast Piping Tionól in the Catskills, USA. Louise holds a unique place in the history of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann as the only person ever to win four senior All-Ireland titles in a single day.
