Formed in the late 1970s, during an extraordinary flowering of Irish musical creativity, Scullion emerged from a chance meeting between founding members Sonny Condell and Philip King. At a time when bands such as Planxty, The Bothy Band and De Danann were redefining traditional music, Scullion forged their own path, blending folk, rock, Americana and traditional influences to create a sound that remains uniquely their own. At the heart of Scullion is the extraordinary songwriting of Sonny Condell, whose evocative lyrics and timeless melodies have given Irish music some of its most treasured songs, including Down in the City, Eyelids into Snow and John the Baptist.
Today, Condell and King, alongside the exceptional guitar playing of Robbie Overson, continue to captivate audiences with beautiful harmonies, intricate musicianship and engaging storytelling. Their performances are intimate, uplifting, and full of warmth, celebrating the simple joy of making music together. Their acclaimed album Long Wave, released after a recording hiatus of more than 27 years, reaffirmed their place among Ireland’s most beloved bands. Now, with renewed creative energy, Scullion have been recording with acclaimed producer John Reynolds at Big Tree Studio. Their forthcoming album, Home in the Sky, is scheduled for release in 2027. For this special festival performance at Dalkey Castle, expect an evening of timeless songs, exquisite musicianship and rich storytelling from a band whose music continues to inspire and delight audiences across generations.
